Our Venetian Beads are all hand made by Ventian glass artisan. Beadmaking is a very old tradition and it takes several years to become a glass bead master.		This is the most beautiful bridge of Venice. 	The glass bead master needs a complete concentration when making each individual piece. One little mistake and the entire work is ruined. .(When I am sitting in front of a lamp making a Venetian bead, it seems like time and things around me have no meaning anymore. Only what I am trying to do is important.)		This is one of my favorite Bead designs. Interesting FACTS

Venetian Beads :Venetian Beads are made by using glass canes or sticks made mostly from Moretti (effetre) on Murano Island.    Murano Glass is divided by many different kinds of glass. The most popular are 1) Transparent, 2) Non Transparent , 3) opaline, 4) alabastro.     Using these kinds of glass and mixing them with gold or silver foil makes it possible to make almost any shape and decoration.  The first step is the glass has to be prepared.   For each bead it is necessary to have different diameter stick depending on the decorations or size to make. This step is very important because, the stick depends on the development of the entire bead. There are many types of Venetian glass a master bead maker may choose from, as each one is unique.   Venetian glass can not be created from normal glass; it has to be specificlly made from the same company or as to be with the esact coefficent of expansion and what is most important created by the master bead maker in order for it to be later called, VENETIAN BEADS.

Venetian Glass     There are many books about Venetian glass and history of glass making. But, what I would like to transmit to you is the feeling of this wonderful material.    Venetian glass gets its name because; it is made in Venezia on the island of Murano.   What also is important is the how the Master glass beads artisan are able to insert inside their own design within the glass. It seems like they are sharing part of their soul, it is their passion to create.
Venetian Mask:   Today, Venetian Masks are some of the most popular items to buy and see in Venice.   Hundreds of years ago these Masks were made for other reasons such as social affairs and also medical. But today they are made for souvenirs or worn for Carnival or even to the Opera.
The way to make to make a Venetian Mask is to start from a clay based mold, which is shaped by the artist. Once the mold is made, the artist pours on it a thick strate of chalk. Once chalked the Mask Mold is ready to take off the clay, this way we can have the same shape in negative form. From this mold, it is now possible to start making a Venetian Mask.   Venetian Masks are all made with paper, in Italian it is called ‘CARTAPESTA’ which means paper saturated in a solution of water and glue, like paper mache.     The artist then has to fill the mold for a minimum of three layers to help strengthen the shell.
On average it will take up to 12 hours to dry, and up to 24 for larger Masks. Once completely dried the Mask is carefully checked for any imperfections and if needed, repaired.   When this phase is done it is now time to be brushed with sand paper and painted white.
The next phase is where the artist begins to create their masterpiece. The artist either creates their own design or has an order from the buyer.   To start with, bright or dark colours are painted on the Mask; careful hand control is needed as some of the markings are quite small and unique. Then colorful ribbons, fabric, beads pearls, silver or gold foil is added. The imagination is endless.
Italy
Italy has always been one of the countries that protected and respected hand craft work. It is for this reason that in Italy you can still find a lot of independent artisans doing the jobs their ancestors did.   Especially in Venice.   During the Republic of Venice there were schools that taught artisan's work. In Murano, one could learn how to make handcrafted beads. Techniques like millefiori or mosaic beads were very popular at that time.    Gold and silver foils were introduced later because there were difficulty of the way of burning glass.     Also, the Murano Glass was protected by special law that kept the glass only in the island of Murano.   Today one can still find the original handcraft work from centuries in Murano and buy original handcraft beads made with mosaic, gold foil beads, silver foil beads, white gold foil beads all representing centuries of Venetian Glass making.
